Famous revivalists quotes on Holy Spirit ![]() ANOINTED QUOTES OF FAMOUS REVIVALISTS: Did you know that it is possible to know all about Jesus and not know Jesus? This has been the observation of many great evangelists including the great 19th century evangelist, Dr. Charles Finney: "It is one thing to have thoughts and ideas and opinions concerning Christ and an entirely different thing to know Christ as He is revealed by the Holy Spirit....I have often feared that many professed Christians knew Christ only after the flesh; that is, they have no other knowledge of Christ than what they obtain by reading and hearing about Him without any special revelation of Him to the inward being by the Holy Spirit....They regard sanctification as brought about by the formation of holy habits, instead of resulting from the revelation of Christ to the soul in all his fullness and relations and the soul's renunciation of self and appropriation of Christ in these relations....But we need to have our necessities in this respect clearly revealed to us by the Holy Spirit and this relation of Christ made plain to our apprehension....Oh, how infinitely blind he is to the fullness and glory of Christ who does not know himself and Christ as both are revealed by the Holy Spirit.....It is one thing to theorize and speculate and opine about Christ and an infinitely different thing to know Him as He is revealed by the Holy Spirit. When Christ is fully revealed to the soul by the Comforter, it will never again doubt the attainability and reality of entire sanctification in this life." (excerpt from Dr. Charles Finney's sermon: 'Sanctification') ________________________________________________________ I have found a chapter in Finney's: "How to experience Revival" that proves to me that human nature is exactly the same in our time as in Finney's time as it was in Paul's time. The chapter is called; "Be Filled With the Spirit."(Eph. 5:18) "WHY DO MANY NOT HAVE THE SPIRIT? It may be that you live a hypocritical life. Your prayers are not earnest and sincere. Not only is your religion a mere show without any heart, but you are insincere in your personal exchange with others. Others are so frivolous that the Spirit will not dwell with them! Others are so proud that they cannot have the Spirit. They like to find ways to prove to everyone that they are better than others. They are so fond of dress, high life, and fashion, it is no wonder they are not filled with the Spirit. Some are so worldly minded, love property so well, and are trying so hard to get rich, that they cannot have the Spirit. How can He dwell with them when all their thoughts are on things of the world and all their powers are absorbed in procuring wealth?....They show how much they love the world in all their conversations with others....how can such believers have the Spirit of God? It is impossible! Others are neglecting some known duty, and that is why they do not have the Spirit. If you have neglected any known duty and lost the spirit of prayer, you must yield first. God has a disagreement with you. You have refused obedience to God, and you must change. You may have forgotten it but God has not! You must recall your failure and repent. God never will yield or grant you His Spirit until you repent! If you know what it is to commune with God, how sweet it is to dissolve in penitence and to be filled with the Spirit, you cannot help but desire a return of those joys... if you wish to have the Spirit of God dwell with you, you must lead a different life. You must give up the world. You must make sacrifices...you must confess your sins...you do not really want to have the Spirit come, unless He will consent to let you live as you please. HE WILL NEVER DO THAT!" ('How to experience Revival,' Charles Finney pp.129-131) ________________________________________________________ Evangelist, F. B. Meyer is another of these heavily anointed men of God. His ministry had a major impact on the life of Oswald Chambers. In F. B. Meyer's sermon called "The Chambers of the King," he describes vividly how it is that all Christians come to a place where they discover that they need a greater filling of the Holy Spirit: "Many of us have lately been startled to find that we have been content with too little of the Holy Spirit. There has been enough throne-water to cover the stones in the river bed, but not to fill it's channel. Instead of occupying all, our gracious guest has been confined to one or two back rooms of our hearts; as a poor housekeeper is sometimes put in to keep a mansion, dwelling in attic or cellar; while the suites of splendid apartments are consigned to dust-sheets and cobwebs, shuttered, dismantled, and locked. Each Christian has the Holy Spirit; but each Christian needs more and more of Him, until the whole nature is filled. Nay, it would be truer to say, the Holy Spirit wants more and more of us. Let us ask our Heavenly Father to give us of His Spirit in ever enlarging measures; and as we ask, let us yield ourselves incessantly to His indwelling and in working. Then let us believe that we are filled, not because we feel it, but because we are sure that God is keeping His word with us: 'Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water.' It is true that the filling of the Spirit involves separation, a giving up, going apart, which is keenly bitter to the flesh. The filling of Pentecost is a baptism of fire. But there is joy amid the flames as the bonds shrivel, and the limbs are free, and the Son of God walks beside." F.B. Meyer ________________________________________________________ Revival Commentary by; Robert Murray McCheyne, born on May 21, 1813, in Edinburgh, Scotland: "Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?" Psalms 85:6 "Revive us again," or literally, return and make us live anew. It is the prayer of those who have received some life, but feel their need of more. They had been made alive by the Holy Spirit. They felt the sweetness and excellence of this new, hidden, divine life. They pant for more -- "Wilt thou not revive us again?" "That thy people may rejoice in thee." They plead with God to do this for the sake of His people, that their joy may be full; and that it may be in the Lord -- in the Lord of their Righteousness -- in the Lord their Strength. They have lost their clear discovery of Christ. They see Him but dimly. They have lost the sight of His beauty -- the savor of His good ointment -- the hold of His garment. They seek him, but find Him not. They cannot stir up the heart to lay hold on Christ. The Spirit dwells scantily in their soul. The living water seems almost dried up within them. The soul is dry and barren. Corruptions are strong: grace is very weak. ______________________________________________________ ![]() |
